Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Line-contact roller bearings with a very high radial load capacity and high speed capability, for electric motors, gearboxes, pumps and rolling mills.

Cylindrical roller bearing with steel rollers and cage

NU, NJ, NUP: what the letters mean

In a cylindrical roller bearing the rollers make line contact with the raceways instead of the point contact of a ball bearing. This gives a much higher radial load capacity and stiffness for the same size, while the rollers, guided by ribs and a cage, still allow high speeds.

The design letters describe where the ribs are. NU bearings have two ribs on the outer ring and none on the inner ring, so the shaft can move axially; they are ideal non-locating bearings that absorb thermal expansion. N types are the reverse. NJ bearings add one rib on the inner ring and locate the shaft in one direction, while NUP bearings add a loose rib for location in both directions. Full-complement versions without a cage carry even higher loads at lower speeds, and double-row designs are used in machine-tool spindles.

CPN cylindrical roller bearings are made to German standards with ISO-controlled factory quality control. Send us the full designation including suffixes (for example cage type or clearance) and we will quote a matching bearing.
