Why split plummer block housings?
A bearing housing holds the bearing in the correct position, transfers loads into the machine frame and protects the bearing from dirt and moisture. Cast iron is the classic material because it is rigid, dampens vibration and can be machined accurately at a reasonable cost.
The most common heavy-duty design is the split plummer block: the cap can be removed so that the bearing (typically a self-aligning ball or spherical roller bearing on an adapter sleeve) can be mounted, inspected and replaced without removing the complete shaft. Seals such as felt strips, V-rings, labyrinth or taconite seals are chosen according to contamination, and locating rings set the housing up as a locating or non-locating position. Other cast iron designs include flange and take-up housings.
